Wood Door Finishing Recommendations

Recommended Guide to Staining Wood Entry & Garage Doors
When staining wood entry or wood garage doors, the type of stain you use determines the best application process to achieve a durable, high-quality finish. Below, we outline the recommended steps for both solvent-based and water-based stain applications.
Solvent-Based Stain Application
For projects using a solvent-based stain, proper sealing and finishing are crucial to ensure long-lasting protection and color retention. Follow these steps:
- Apply Solvent-Based Stain
- Evenly apply the stain using a brush, rag, or spray, following the manufacturer’s recommended dry times.
- Wipe away excess stain for an even finish.
- Use 2K Isolator WBV 1090
- This isolator effectively locks in the solvent stain, preventing migration and ensuring it performs as an exterior-grade application.
- Follow the technical data sheet for application guidelines and dry times.
- Klima Nanotech Series HTM5A273, HTM5B052, HTM5B036, If no stain is desired apply TN-931 Clear Topcoat (Recommended: 3 Coats) OR for stained wood use (Recommended: 2 Coats)
- This topcoat provides exceptional durability and UV resistance for exterior wood surfaces.
- Allow proper drying time between coats and follow the technical data sheet–TN931 or technical data sheet – Klima Nanotech Series for best results.
Water-Based Stain Application
For projects using a water-based stain, follow these steps:
- Apply Water-Based Gel Stain
- Apply evenly and wipe off excess for a smooth, uniform appearance.

Recommended Guide to Painting Wood Entry Doors
When painting wood entry doors, it’s crucial to consider Light Reflectance Value (LRV) to ensure durability and warranty coverage. For colors with an LRV of 55 and below, the warranty is voided due to potential heat absorption and material stress. However, if a darker color is still desired, we strongly recommend using EPUR STONE for the best performance and longevity. For doors painted in LRV 55 and above, achieve optimal results by applying a high-quality long oil primer followed by two coats of premium 100% acrylic paint for superior adhesion, flexibility, and weather resistance.
